Magnificent ‘Madu Ganga’
A breezy boat ride on the Madu Ganga will not only take your breath away but will invigorate your senses and uplift your soul. The Madu River, situated in the Galle District is a fitting example of the intricate river channels which decorate our country’s south west coast. In the global context, the ecological importance of this site has garnered it the ‘Ramsar Wetland’ status in 2003 being the second largest wetland in Sri Lanka with a colossal 915 hectares with 23 islands inhabited by nearly 300 families. The Madu Ganga Sanctuary is now a Tourist Development Area and a Special Area Managed (SAM) by the Coast Conservation Department. Balapitiya is where the ‘Madu Ganga’ makes its home.

Heavenly High at Hanthana
The Hanthana Mountain range is a beautiful delightful set of hill tops which are stunning with lush panoramic views. Overlooking grassy plains and eucalyptus trees lining the estates, you will see friendly faces of the estate workers greeting you. Driving breezily along the well-paved road, you will meander on the first and second Circular Roads which lead up to the Hanthana Housing Scheme. Also, the Forest Reserve road where the Circuit Bungalow is located offers sightings of hedgehogs, mongoose, rabbit and occasional wild boar spottings. The best aspect about Hanthana and the housing scheme is that the residents live in harmony with the animals and the peaceful and serene environment is testament of that.

Kalpitiya Islands, a wildlife haven
The scenic Kalpitiya marine sanctuary extends to about 307 sq. km. being home to Sri Lanka’s largest coral reef, the ‘Bar Reef’. Right around clustered in a perfectly-formed jigsaw puzzle, are the islands around Kalpitiya which are both large and small shaped delicately within the sea and the Kalpitiya lagoon. Most of these islands, especially the ones by the lagoon, are covered with lush green mangroves that offer a haven for wildlife.

Midnight ramble
Malaka Rodrigo goes in search of night life at Horton Plains “I have drunk to the full the sweet fragrance of dudhli flowers on moon-lit nights and, each time, I have felt that while I was in the city I had not known that moonlight could be so exquisite, that it could evoke such fear and detachment. I will not attempt to describe those moonlit nights; one may not experience them merely by hearing or reading of them. Beauty of this sort comes alive only under the wide-open skies, in silence and loneliness, with the undulating forests stretching as far as the horizon.”

Travel: Mahiyangana
Despite controversies on the rights of the veddas, the Maduru Oya National Park has been declared as a vedda reservation site. With a history so rich and possibly the only connection Sri Lankans have to their ancestors, the well-being of the veddas should be taken into consideration. It's true, the veddas have means of living and their children are being educated in a vedda school while some veddas have graduated to being business people and talking on mobile phones. However, the veddas do like it when tourists and domestic travellers visit them. Having a different language where one might hear names like 'Kekuli' and 'Kekuli-pojji', it is good to know that history is still preserved in places like Dolagahawela, Muthugalwela passing Mahiyangana.
