Western Provincial Council polls on Apr.25
Fourteen political parties and 23 independent groups fielding 2,048 candidates will join the fray in the Western Provincial Council elections to be held on April 25, election officials in Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts said yesterday.
102 members – 43, 39 and 20 - from Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara respectively – will be elected to the council after the polls.

Pic by Shantha Ratnayake Seven nomination lists tendered by political parties and four tendered by independent groups in the three districts were rejected. The main opposition UNP and the JVP handed their nominations yesterday. The ruling UPFA tendered the nominations on Wednesday. The UNP’s Colombo district list is headed by former councilor Lakshman Abeygunaratna. Its Gampaha and Kalutara leaders are Lawrence Madiwela and Kithsiri Kahatapitiya. UNP’s General Secretary Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayaka and party strongman Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayaka were present in Colombo and Gampaha elections offices at the time of tendering nominations. UPFA General Secretary Susil Premjayantha said the party’s Colombo District list is headed by former councilor Sunil Jayamini while the Gampaha District leader is former Provincial Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.
The Colombo district JVP list will be headed by Duminda Nagamuwa, Gampaha by Waruna Rajapaksa and Kalutara by Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, a party spokesman said. None of the major political parties had named their Chief Ministerial candidatea. In Kalutara nominations tendered by Sinhale Mahaasammata Bhoomiputhra Pakshaya and United National Alliance and an independent group were rejected. In Gampaha, nominations lists of Eksath Lanka Prajathantra Peramuna, Deshapremi Jathika Peramuna, Sri Lanka Prajathantravadi Peramuna and one independent group were rejected. There are 3,820,214 registered voters in the Western Province.
