Transmission tower coming up at Kokavil
A new transmission tower to provide telecommunication, broadcasting and internet facilities to the people in the North is being constructed at Kokavil. The Mass Media Ministry and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) have undertaken this project at a cost of Rs. 220 million on President Mahinda Rajapaksa's direction. The Army will play a major contribution in the construction work which consists of three main stages.

A mobile surge
Cellular phone usage in Sri Lanka has shown a dramatic rise. A total of over 14 million registered SIM card holders are reported to be using mobile phones, a Telecommunication Regulatory Commission spokesman said. Over 14 million registered SIM card holders use mobile phones as a means of communication in Sri Lanka. As a developing country, it is a high figure compared with many other developing nations.

Etisalat has partnered with Global Crossing, a leading global IP solutions provider, to offer seamless connectivity alternatives to customers keen to expand their connectivity to the US, Canada and Latin America from the UAE. As part of this alliance, Etisalat has set up its own node in New York with last mile connectivity provided by Global Crossing to offer global connectivity solutions through a secure and fully owned IP/MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) network.

SLT rewards dealers
The prepaid telephone cards sector in Sri Lanka is highly competitive, yet SLT has been able to maintain a steady growth in their prepaid cards product range. In comparison 2008, SLT has marked an escalation of significant percentage in the prepaid cards growth.

SLT remarked that they would not have been able to achieve such a success without the contribution of their dealers and retailers since more than 90% of their prepaid cards revenue is earned through the dealers and retailers, said a spokesman of SLT addressing the dealer convention recently.

At Sri Lanka Telecom Summit 2010: Innovative ideas needed to invest in Telecom Industry
A nation needs a strong broadband backbone to deliver the technology to all segments of the society said chief regulatory advisor and director government affairs of BT (India) (Pvt) ltd Shri Satya Gupta. He was addressing Sri Lanka Telecom Summit 2010 in Colombo last week. Explaining the shape of the national broadband network, Gupta said that it should be similar to the road network or other public utilities and not owned by a single company. Public private partnership is a better model but it should be owned by the government. Otherwise it is not a national broadband backbone, he said.

International telecom giant Etisalat arrives in Sri Lanka
All customers will be treated with the same care and dedication by Etisalat and no person or group will provided special privileges over others, said Etisalat Lanka Chief Executive Officer Dumindra Ratnayaka. In reply to a question by Adaderana regarding claims by certain telecom providers that new comers into the field were being resisted by established companies, Dumindra Ratnayaka said that it was a fabricated story and that the providers already in the market had not resorted to any such steps and will not do so in the future too.
