FM Derana takes Jothi’s songs towards world record
 On Monday, March 01, from 7.00 am FM Derana joins veteran playback singer, the late H.R. Jothipala on a world record when the radio channel broadcasts Jothi’s songs for an entire 24 hours. Perhaps for the first time in history, the songs sung by a single person will be broadcast for an entire day. Listeners’ can enjoy a cross section of the songs by Jothi, from his debut to his last.

Competition between a DJ and a music band is intense today. DJs are being recognised as a force who have the capacity to impress their audience with their selection of music to suit the many different occasions at which they perform. Belonging to this group of DJs is young Minol Hewage who is of the opinion, like the others, that DJing is an art and it is important not to get into a spin when entertaining audiences. “I started my mobile DJing with Beat System Entertainment, Nugegoda. I learnt my ABC in DJing with this organisation. Before going mobile I worked with a popular English radio station and gained more experience in selecting music for entertainment.”

A.D. adds to the addendum
 Anno Domini (A.D.) is a musical outfit like no other where every band member shines in both playing and singing their heart out! “Everyone’s a star in this band because there’s ample opportunity for every member to do vocals and play instruments. Plus, we all play more than one instrument making it an added benefit” said Shehan Perera, the founder of A.D.

The first time I heard Anno Domini perform was at a Country Roads show and they literally brought the town down. “We are influenced by various genres which make us an open-minded band when performing to an audience” said Shehan, who started the band as an unplugged outfit that also did connected gigs. They play everything from country music to the latest pop beats and have mastered the art of getting the audience to dance and let their hair down! Today, the band members comprise Shehan and Thushantha who play guitar rotating on leads every time while Timal rifts up the bass guitar.

Once again spreading his music vibes is clarinettist Saybhan Samat along with his Society Band. The personnel include Louise Anandappa on keyboards and vocals. She hails from a family of musicians who have made their mark in Sri Lanka. Daughter of the distinguished pianist and singer the late Gerry Crake. Louise’ experience and wealth of musical knowledge is enviable. Other members of the band are Roy de Silva on keyboards and guitar with their male vocalist Darlan Perera who doubles up on guitar.

One year of success and a new CD
 The young band “Chimes of the 70s” completed a successful year in the music scene in January and the leader 18-year-old Rukshan Karunanayake who hails from Gampaha is hoping that the band in this new year 2010 will be a quiet storm capturing the hearts of more young music lovers. “Our objective is to promote the pop music of the 70s, preserving the style of music introduced by the great musician Clarence Wijewardena.
In fact our repertoire is built around almost all the songs of Clarence. But we also perform the popular western songs when we play at special functions, weddings and other occasions,” observes an exuberant Rukshan.
