Garbage-free Colombo in three months - Environment Minister
The garbage problem in Colombo will be solved within the next three months. A joint action is being taken in this direction by the CMC, Provincial Garbage Management Project, UDA, Environment Ministry and the CEA's Pilisaru projet, Environment and Natural Resources Minister and Colombo District UPFA candidate Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

Rare white tigers in Dehiwala
The pair of the very rare species of white tigers known as ‘Panthera Tigris Tigers’ gifted to the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens by the Xiang Jiang Zoo of the Suenzu region of China under an animal exchange program were placed in their enclosure at the Dehiwala Zoo for public viewing yesterday. The pair was air freighted to Sri Lanka via Kuala Lumpur on February 27 said the Zoological Gardens Director Ananda Lokuranamuka.

Botanical Gardens for H’tota, Awissawella
Two botanical gardens will be opened at Hambantota and Awissawella by early next year, said National Botanical Gardens Department Director General Dr. Cyril Wijesundara yesterday. The Government has launched a program to established 15 botanical gardens in the country according to the 10 year Mahinda Chinthana policy plan of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Wilpattu reopened to the public
The Wilpattu National Park was re-opened to the public yesterday after seven years. The park was closed due to the security situation which prevailed in the country during the war. Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka can be seen here at the opening ceremony.

In awe of the orchid
Sauntering breezily in the greenhouse called Orchid House at the Botanical Gardens or even at Hakgala Gardens, the beauty of the purple orchids dazzle your senses with the deep colour of royalty. Sri Lanka, being home to a fascinating 170 orchid species of which 74 are endemic and many more are produced with different variations. Horticultural Advisor to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, L.S. Wanigatunge took the serenading Sri Lankan orchid to create a new hybrid for the HM Queen Elizabeth II, christening it after her majesty. In addition to this, retail fashion entrepreneur Otara Gunawardena of ODEL also has an orchid called Dendrobrium Otara named after her by the Horticultural and Flora Conservation Society of Sri Lanka.

Lanka pledges to protect sea turtles
The Sri Lankan government says that it is concerned about the welfare of sea turtles which live and breed on the island's southern coastline. The authorities say turtle hatcheries are operating there which contravene conservation laws and that they will prosecute those people involved.
