Despite high production and labour cost : Tea exports surpass US$ 1b mark
Tea exports from Sri Lanka have exceeded the US $ One billion target for the past three consecutive years. Sri Lanka is the only tea producing country to surpass the US dollar One billion mark in tea exports. The Government is supportive of the tea industry and has provided Rs. 4.5 billion for the fertilizer subsidy. It is important to re-plant where it is necessary for increased production, Sri Lanka Tea Board Chairman Lalith Hettiarachchi told Daily News Business.

Plenty Foods pays premium price for corn farmers
Approximately 300 farmers in Vavuniya have been beneficiaries of a bountiful harvest received from a pilot corn cultivation project initiated by Plenty Foods (Pvt) Ltd., a subsidiary of Ceylon Biscuits Limited. The Corn crop has been purchased at a premium price for production of Samaposha.

No setback in tea exports
 There is no set back in tea production or tea exports, Sri Lanka Tea Board Chairman Lalith Hettiarachchi said.
Sri Lanka is the largest exporter of pre-packed tea under brand name among tea producing countries. Sri Lanka earns more revenue from tea exports than other countries, he told the Daily News yesterday.

Tank project targets 6,000 farmers
The Northern Re-awakening Project has taken initiatives to rehabilitate Iranamadu Tank at a cost of Rs. 200 million with World Bank assistance to provide irrigation facilities to resettled families in the Kilinochchi district, Project Director PH Sugathadasa said. The tank located in the Northern part of the district is the main irrigation tank in the province.

Lanka leading in tea exports : Akbar Brothers among top five
 Akbar Brothers Group has exported 42.3 million kilograms of tea in 2009.

They have also been ranked as one of the largest packetted tea exporters in 2009, with exports totalling 20.6 million kilograms.
In the Teabag Segment too, Akbar Brothers have emerged as a leading exporter with exports totalling 3.6 million kilograms, the company said.

Recently World Vision Lanka held a Farmer Appreciation Ceremony to mark the completion of its integrated farming and sustainable agriculture project which has brought new hope and purpose to farmers. Over 82,000 hectares cultivated during Maha
A total of 82,271 hectares of land have been successfully cultivated in the Mahaweli systems during the Maha season in 2009 and 2010. Mahaweli Authority Director Chula Wellappili said it is expected to gain a paddy harvest of 0.5 million metric tons during the period.

Fertilizer project implemented.
A foundation stone was laid yesterday to commence a large scale compost fertilizer project in the Pothuwil-kumbura area in Kollonnawa as a solution to the garbage problem that persisted in Kollonnawa for 30 long years. This was as a result of a request made by Kollonnawa SLFP Chief Organizer R Dumindha Silva, from the Environmental Ministry.

Govt policies pay dividends: Bumper paddy harvest during Maha season
A bountiful paddy harvest has been reported during this year's Maha season. A bumper harvest is reported from all districts, the Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Ministry stated. We would certainly attain the target of 2.3 million metric tonnes of paddy, a Ministry spokesman said.
