Lawyers to challenge court martial
Lawyers of General Sarath Fonseka will appear before the court martial on Tuesday and challenge the legality of trying the former Army Commander before a bench comprising officers junior to him in rank, the JVP said.

Charges framed against General Sarath Fonseka: Courts Martial begin March 16 and 17
*One probes political activities while in service
*Other probes procurement offences
Commander-in-Chief President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed two Courts Martial to inquire into charges against former Army Commander and Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka.
Sarath Fonseka
This was done on the recommendations of Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya, Military Spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe told the media yesterday. Each Court Martial will commence at the Navy Headquarters on March 16 and 17.

Gambling den raided
A gambling den which had been in operation for a number of years as a hairdressing salon in the vicinity of the Maligawatte Police station was raided by the police yesterday . The Police on a tip off sent a decoy to the place in the previous day. Five women including the owner and her sister were arrested on the information provided by the police decoy.

Case filed against Fonseka for contempt of court
Major W.W.M.L. Palipana filed a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court yesterday against General Sarath Fonseka for contempt of court, in not complying with the Supreme Court order to reinstate him. The petitioner cited General Sarath Fonseka, Secretary Defence, Sri Lanka Army Pay and Records Director and the Attorney General as respondents in the case.

Five with counterfeit notes arrested
Kekirawa Police arrested five suspects on Saturday with counterfeit notes of Rs 2,000, Rs 1,000 and Rs. 500 denominations totalling all Rs 86,000. Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody told the Daily News that the fake notes had been printed by two women in Mahawa and Talawa. The women were in their thirties. Police also seized the computer and other equipment needed to print the fake notes in the possession of the two women suspects. The Police said that three persons came in a three-wheeler had attempted to buy goods from a shop in Himbutuwewa, Kekirawa with one Rs 1,000 counterfeit note and the owner (female) of the shop had informed of the crime to the Kekirawa Police.

Student ends life in abandoned house
A 13-year-old student of a leading school in Welimada committed suicide by hanging himself in an abandoned house near his residence on Wednesday evening. Welimada Police told the Daily News that they are following several clues to establish why the student committed suicide.
