US Embassy supports language teaching at Ruhuna University
The US Embassy along with the Ruhuna University launched a two-week training program for the English Teaching Unit staff of the University. The program aims to introduce American TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of other languages) standards which would help improve the new Bachelor of Arts Special Degree syllabus at the University.

ICCR signs MoU with Colombo University
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Colombo University for the establishment of a Visiting Chair in Social Sciences at the Colombo University was signed yesterday at the University Senate Hall by Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha and Colombo University Vice Chancellor Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama.

KDU Aeronautic Engineering course open from this year
General Sir John Kotalawala Defence University (KDU) Vice Chancellor Major General Milinda Peiris yesterday stated that the Aeronautic Engineering Faculty of KDU is open from this year for the civil students who are qualified for university entrance. Vice Chancellor Peiris stating that the Aeronautic Engineering stream of the Engineering Faculty was open only for the officer cadets of the Sri Lanka Air Force told the Daily News that it is open to the civil society as there were a large number of employment opportunities in the international job market.

Special training for non-graduate teachers
The Education Ministry has selected a batch of 7,800 non-graduate teachers for special training under its program to improve quality in the Education, said Ministry's Commissioner in-charge of the Colleges of Education unit Y.A.N.D. Yapa. He said this training program would be conducted over two and a half years as a weekend course at 42 centres countrywide in the Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Sri Lankan students to compete at ISEF
Three selected Sri Lankan students will compete at the prestigious 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), to be held in San Jose California, in the United States, in May this year. The Intel ISEF Fair is presumed to be the world's largest pre-college science fair and competition. Participating students are extended an opportunity to explore, discover and innovate at a global level. It encourages, promotes and provides a platform for students to engage in challenging scientific questioning, using authentic research practices and create solutions to the problems of the future.

The GCE (Advanced Level) students at Mangalarama Maha Vidyalaya, Batticaloa do not have adequate facilities for higher education. Four students who were successful at the 2009 examination failed to receive the aggregate marks to enter the university. So far only one student has gained entry.
