India gives US$ 67.4 m to upgrade Southern railway line
The Indian Government will provide the credit balance of US $ 67.4 million to upgrade the Southern Railway Line from Colombo to Matara. Finance and Planning Ministry, Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera and Export-Import Bank of India Executive Director Prabhakar Dalal signed the credit agreement at the Finance and Planning Ministry yesterday.

Northern libraries to be developed
The National Library and Documentation Services Board has launched a program to develop all libraries in the North destroyed due to LTTE terrorism. According to the National Library and Documentation Services Board, the program aims to distribute books among 110 public libraries in the North. Distributing books worth Rs. Four million was initiated in Vavuniya.

Lights for 87 percent of households
The Government has provided electricity for 87 percent of the households in the country. When the UPFA Government assumed office in 2004, nearly 68 percent of the total households were provided electricity. During the past six years, the Government increased it to 87 percent, Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne told the Sunday Observer.

Facelift for Colombo’s `underserved’ settlements
The Government has focused considerable attention towards improving the quality of under served settlements in the Colombo city under the “Nagamu Purawara” program on the directive of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Housing and Common Amenities Ministry sources said.
