Special eye clinic
A special free eye clinic will be held tomorrow at the Eye Hospital, Colombo to mark the third World Glaucoma Day 2010 which will be on March 12. This clinic is a joint venture organized by the Sri Lanka Ophthalmologist Association and Vision 2020 Secretariat, Health Ministry sources said.
Glaucoma
* Affects 12 pc of global population
* Around 50 pc cases remain undetected
* 10-12 pc of Lankans have Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an epidemiological challenge affecting approximately 12 percent of the global population with an estimated 50 percent Glaucoma cases remaining undiagnosed. Nearly 4.5 million people of the world population are on the verge of total blindness due to the Glaucoma. Exactly half of the global population who have diabetics are suffering from cataract. Nearly 4 percent suffer from Trachoma which is fortunately not in Sri Lanka.

Dengue eradication week in CP
A dengue eradication program covering Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts will be launched from March 15 to 22 in the form of a Shramadana campaign at the local area level, Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa said. All Government institutions, schools and other village based State agencies will take part.

Ministry looks after kidney patients Some not visited home for three months
A large number of kidney patients stay in State hospitals for years without anyone visiting them or family support. Some have been staying at hospitals for three years. The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry has made arrangements to take their entire responsibility, a Ministry spokesman said. According to the spokesman, these patients stay at State hospitals as they cannot live in their homes and lead a normal life due to their poor health condition.

Pilot project to use Cuban BTI
The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry has already appointed a Technical Committee in connection with using BTI bacteria in Sri Lanka. A special discussion was held in this regard with Cuban Ambassador Nirsia Castro Guevara a few days ago. It is expected to use around 30,000 litres of BTI bacteria imported from Cuba for the pilot project to be launched in Kandy.

Stroke, No. Two killer in Lanka
Stroke is the number Two cause for deaths in Sri Lanka, while the number one reason is heart attacks, a Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry spokesman said.
Strokes
* 80 pc of patients are males
* Around 50 pc out of 80 pc are heavy smokers, alcoholics
* 30 pc can be completely cured
* 10 pc of patients die
He said around 80 percent of the patients admitted to hospitals after a stroke are males. Only 20 percent are females. Around 50 percent out of the 80 percent male victims are heavy smokers and alcoholics, the spokesman said.

Nearly 8,000 dengue cases reported in two months
Sri Lanka has reported 8,000 dengue cases within the first two months of this year and the highest number of cases were reported from the Jaffna district. This is an increase of 2,227 dengue cases reported during the corresponding period last year.

Lead, a potent chemical hazard, is being used in the manufacture of paints in Sri Lanka and elsewhere. The Chief Executive Officer of Akzo Nobel Paints Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., Gerald de Saram told a media briefing last week that some of the chemicals used in the paint industry are extremely dangerous.

Stroke Association strikes 'Gold'
The Sri Lanka National Stroke Association (SLNSA) had won the Gold Medal for the first time at the World Stroke Day 2009, organized by the World Stroke Organization in the USA. A spokesman for the Health and Nutrition Ministry said the World Stroke Organization held a competition to mark the World Stroke Day 2009 representing 56 organizations from 30 countries. The SLNSA headed by its President Dr. Padama Gunaratne presented empirical evidence and successful stroke treatment activities which were carried out to prevent stroke related diseases in Sri Lanka.
